Eat more for weight loss

Updated: Nov 4, 2020

We are often tricked into thinking we need to eat less to lose weight and this is not necessarily correct. The truth is we need to eat more but of the right types of foods! Our focus needs to be on balancing our blood sugar at every meal as this will avoid our bodies storing extra sugar as fat!

We have all experienced a blood sugar roller coaster…. You have eaten yet shortly after you feel famished, have sweats and you feel you must eat something sweet right now. This is due to what you ate being too high in sugar and your body needing to try to bring you back to balance by releasing more insulin, which then brings your sugar level crashing down, and causes you to reach for more sugar or caffeine and starting the blood sugar roller coaster again!

As an example, let us take a look at the good old Marmite on toast for breakfast. It is tasty, but will this keep my blood sugar balanced after I have finished eating it? Am I going to be reaching for a mid-morning snack??

Although I have chosen high-fibre rye grain bread which is a much better choice than fake low-fibre, white, sugar-loaded bread, I could still make improvements to this Marmite on toast by making sure I add protein and healthy fats.

We can avoid the blood sugar roller coaster by adding protein and healthy fats to each meal or snack as they slow down the digestion, which also slows the absorption of carbohydrate-based food you consumed along with it. This lessens the intensity and frequency of the Blood Sugar Roller Coaster.

Check out my new balanced plate....

I have opted to add tofu scramble as my protein source and slices of avocado for my healthy fat source. Combining these with the high-fibre rye toast, I have a winning magic plate combination that also looks colourful and tastes more delicious.

Play around with your meals and snacks aiming to create your own magic plate by including a high-fibre food, a high quality source of protein and a healthy fat. Remember 'It takes a small hinge to swing a big door', Start with small steps and it will soon become a new habit for you.
